Dental Hygiene is a very important element of our service with its primary role being the prevention of dental disease. Patients often see the Dental Hygienist for a, ‘Scale & Polish' and most people see this as a process where the teeth are cleaned and polished to remove staining caused by diet or tobacco. This is true but there is a lot more to it than that.

Our hygienist carefully charts the teeth and gums noting anything that could develop into a problem at a later stage. And as we all know, prevention IS better than cure!

Particular attention is paid to any inflammation, bleeding, swelling, and the presence of plaque and calculus. Plaque is an organic mixture of bacteria, saliva and organic debris. Calculus (sometimes known as tartar) is plaque that has hardened into a chalk-like substance. Both plaque and calculus are extremely harmful to the gums and underlying bone tissues. Our dental hygienist is very skilled in removing this harmful substance and does so very gently with the minimum of discomfort.

Our Dental Hygienist will also help develop an oral hygiene programme specific for every patient. This involves re-educating patients with regards to the use of toothbrushes, electronic aids, dental floss, inter-dental brushes, floss to name a few.
